Memis and his Ice-Cream Van

Memis was born in Cyprus and has been living in East London since the 1980s. I meet him in Poplar, and he tells me he remembers the area when it was all factories. His wife used to have her own ice-cream van, and so did her father. They taught Memis about the business, and he has been selling ice-cream for more than 20 years now. In his spare time he goes shooting in Essex – pheasants and wood pigeons mainly. He has a dog, Peggy, who has now retired from hunting.
